Opinion | An inconceivable backward step on vaccines

Table of Contents

It was disheartening to read that the number of unvaccinated children in the school system is increasing, as reported in the Nov. 10 news article “Vaccine exemptions for kindergartners hit highest level yet, CDC data shows.”

Thirty-nine years ago, when I began taking my son to the same pediatrician who had treated his father, the doctor commented, almost offhandedly, that when he began practicing medicine in the 1950s, the pediatric wards were filled all winter with children suffering from whooping cough and all summer with children suffering from measles.

It is inconceivable that parents who refuse to vaccinate their children want to return us to that experience.
